Instructions to fix sagging upholstery from the roof of the car
If you want to know how to fix sagging upholstery from the car roof, you must follow a series of steps that, although they may seem numerous, are faster and easier to do than you might think. The steps to follow are those:
- First of all, you need to put on completely clean vinyl or nitrile gloves. The reason is that the upholstery fabric is usually easily stained due to its light tones. Neoprene gloves and a vapor mask are also required when using degreasers and contact glue.
- Next it will be time to study the damage to the roof of the vehicle. This way you will be able to check if it is necessary to disassemble the trim in its tonality or if, on the contrary, it is not necessary. If the fabric is partially detached along any of the contours, it is not usually necessary to disassemble it. However, in the event that there are sags or they are in places close to ceiling components, such as the courtesy lights, you will have no choice to disassemble it completely.
- If the roof must be disassembled, it will be necessary to disassemble all the elements housed on it, in addition to the sealing gaskets and trim. To make it easier to remove the roof cladding panel, you can opt for an additional heat source.
- Whenever possible due to the configuration of the vehicle, it is advisable to remove the trunk, removing the headrests and folding down the seats. This way the operation will be carried out more easily. In any case, the extraction must be done very carefully so as not to damage it.
- Next, you must place the cladding on a clean and properly padded ridge; and then proceed to the senate of the performance area. In this way you will have to get rid of the old adhesive to make it adhere perfectly when placing the new one. When doing so, make sure to protect the car so that it does not get stained and remove the adhesive using a bristle brush.
- Once the above is done, it will be time to remove the detached adhesive remains, as well as blow off the dirt and clean with a great degreaser.
- After carrying out an exhaustive cleaning, it will be time to apply a specific contact glue on those surfaces that you want to glue. The glue must be able to withstand the temperatures of this part of the car. You can opt for both spray adhesive (for small extensions) or brush glue (for cases in which the entire fabric is replaced). When applying the glue, you must ensure that it is distributed evenly and without staining.
- Once the contact glue has been applied, it will be necessary to wait between 5 to 10 minutes for the contact glue to reach its perfect state to be adhered. The glue arrives at the ideal moment to adhere when touching it and separating the finger, small threads are generated.
- Now is the time to start gluing the fabric carefully, without stretching it and applying a little pressure in order to prevent the formation of small air pockets or wrinkles. The pressure can be done with your hand and fingers or by using some type of cylinder-shaped roller. It is very important for the result to be as expected. In the event that you find air pockets or wrinkles, you will have to repeat the process or puncture the bubble to extract the air
- Then you must let the adhesive dry according to the times established by the manufacturer, which is usually about 60 minutes.
- Once the entire upholstery fabric has been replaced, you can continue with the repair of the car roof. To do this you will have to make cutouts for the accommodation of the different components and assemble all the previously disassembled parts. Finally proceed to clean the upholstery of the car of any possible dirt.
